Training teachers for over 125 years, Edge Hill’s Faculty of Education has continued to invest and innovate, expanding its portfolio to ensure that the highest quality professionals are working with the country’s children and young people. The Faculty recently received a glowing Ofsted report for its teacher training, achieving Grade 1 ‘outstanding' results across every age phase - Primary and Early Years, Secondary and Post-Compulsory Education and Training. This confirms Edge Hill University’s status as one of the top providers of teacher training in the UK. Based in a £9million purpose-built centre of excellence at the university’s award-winning Ormskirk campus, near Liverpool, the Faculty also has a network of study centres throughout the country, all offering unique learning environments that allow students to study at a venue that suits their needs.
What can you study?
The Faculty of Education has developed into the UK’s largest provider of Secondary PGCE programmes, including shortage subjects, namely Mathematics, Science, Design and Technology, Modern Foreign Languages and ICT. Further programmes include Primary Education, Secondary Education in Applied Art and Design, Business Education, English, Geography, History, Music, PE, Psychology, RE and Post-Compulsory Education and Training. All programmes are available to study on a full-time basis and a number can be studied flexibly, with start dates throughout the year. Our new GTP Future Teachers programme also allows trainees to conduct all their study in the classroom and receive a training salary in the process. Students who wish to train to teach Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics, but have an insufficient level of knowledge in their degree to gain entry, can undertake one of our subject knowledge enhancement courses.
Employment prospects
Around 92% of Edge Hill University’s PGCE trainees secure employment as teachers within six months of graduation. Furthermore, should students choose to teach a shortage subject, they will be in great demand and will stand a strong chance of finding employment more quickly.
